An associate of mine recently sent me this old cartoon that sums up the role we all play in the construction industry. Click on the image to see the full joke. While I'd like to think that I listen to the wishes of my clients, I will admit there are times when I want to just design the most elaborate swing I can design.

I think this cartoon also illustrates what I've always known. Every person has their own perspective and you never assume that someone you are working with fully understands your vision. Make sure you have proper communications with all trades. You should be open to other people's suggestions, but at the end of the day, make sure you are getting what you want.
